HJC CL-ST Helmet

The helmet I am riding with currently is HJC’s CL-ST in solid black. This thing is pretty super really; it has a feature list as long as your arm. The noticeable and useful features are the Clearview visor… which is eerily clear… almost like you can see better than normal through it.

The helmet also has a very good anti fog visor and 7 point ventilation system comprising various vents and mesh and other gizmos. It also has a quick release buckle with attached D ring (so you can hang it on a helmet hook) along with Nylex anti - Allergic/bioceramic lining which apparently resists the formation of smell and bacteria”. The inner pads are Replaceable and washable.

Most importantly however is the removable breath and chin guard. The chin guard does a very good job of stopping wind going up into the helmet from under your chin. The Breath guard probably has a very important function… I don’t care it makes you feel like the pilot of a fighter jet, and that is all that matters… just call me Maverick!

Downsides, very few actually; it could be a bit lighter but isn’t overly heavy at 1600gms, the main issues are with the buckle… the strap loosens off quite quickly as is normal with non D-ring type designs and the added D-ring/loop does rattle a bit while riding. I can live with this for the added convenience. And don’t forget… you look like a fighter pilot… and when you are travelling at supersonic speeds on your scoot you can lock the visor down so it doesn’t blow open… a very useful feature I think!

Features:

  • Polycarbonate construction.
  • Quick release visor system.
  • Anti-fog visor.
  • Removable lining.
  • Removable chin guard.
  • Removable chin curtain.
  • 7-point ventilation.
  • Safety standard ECE22.05.
  • ACU Gold standard for use on the track.

HJC CS-12N Helmet

First off let’s get something straight, what is the single most important design aspect of a helmet…right you got it, LOOKS. Well they may not be entirely true. It seems in the modern world we’re definitely moving towards it; if we aren’t already there. Thankfully the HJC CS-12N Session is covered in the looks department as the cool grey tribal pattern actually looks pretty cool, which is saying something as I normally prefer standard boring old black. When I opened up the box I was simply amazed at the quality and features you get on a helmet costing so little. How bout this list:

  • Injection molded thermoplastic shell that’s both lightweight and aerodynamic with extra large eye-port for greater visibility.
  • Flow-through ventilation system with adjustable chin bar, forehead and front side vortex vents along with two lower back and neck roll exhaust vents.
  • Anti-fog system incorporates adjustable front-side vortex vents that draw heat and moisture out of the face shield area.
  • Removable pre-formed air guard directs breath away from the shield
  • Shield also features 8- position positive lock ratchet and tool-less shield removal
  • Comfortable interior features Nylex interior liner with sewn-in top pad and wrap-around neck roll.
  • Quick and easy tool-less shield removal
  • 100% protection from harmful UV rays
  • Built-in communication system speaker pockets
  • DOT certified

Does it all work…well yes. The shield is incredibly large and clear; in fact it’s as good as any helmet I’ve used inc some that are ten times dearer, I actually kept thinking the visor was up it was so clear. The fit is firm by comfortable and the helmet seems to resist fogging slightly better than most entry level models. Best of all the uncomplicated design means the CS-12N only weighs in at a low 1400grams. All in all it’s almost impossible not to love this helmet. It really does make you wonder why anybody would spend more money. There simply isn’t a better value helmet on the market today. I imagine that is why HJC are the worlds biggest helmet brand. We consumers know what we want…we want the bling and we want it cheap.

Momo Fighter

So... did you always want to fly an Apache, Chinook or perhaps the mighty Russian Hind... they are all millitary hellicopters in case you weren't aware and now you can pretend you are launching Air to Ground missiles and strafing the enemy while drifting through your daily commute. The MOMO Fighter range of helmets have been designed as a homage to Hellicopter flight helmets... and to be honest they are about the coolest open face helmet around.

In a range of colours including matte black and with a big, flyboy styled, goggle shaped visor the styling is great. Do they work? In short... yes. The visor is really very well designed with a wide feild of view and good wind protection. The fastening system works very well and the helmet is extremely comfortable. The only slight downside is the price... the Fighter is not a budget helmet... by the same token however, you are not buying budget componentry so the choice is yours.

In short if you are looking for a stylish, comfortable Open Face helmet the MOMO Fighter is definately worth a look.
